Works of Artistic Excellence by City Students – The Suffolk News-Herald


To walk through the Suffolk Art Gallery‘s premier exhibition of the creative hands and minds of the city’s high school students is to witness their talent and vision on display.

The exhibit, which opened Feb. 1 and is on display through Feb. 25, features grade 10, 11, and 12 students from King’s Fork, Lakeland, and Nansemond River High Schools, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy High School, and from the Governor’s School. for the Arts. It is presented by the Suffolk Art League in cooperation with the Suffolk Fine Arts Commission.

Norfolk State University fine arts professor Solomon Isekeije, a juror for the exhibition, selected 116 works of art for the exhibition. This year, 104 students entered 186 works of art to be part of the jury.

Due to COVID-19, rather than holding the normal in-person ceremony to launch the exhibition and honor the winners, the Suffolk Art Gallery held a 10-minute virtual ceremony streamed on its YouTube and Facebook pages.

He awarded Marley McClusker of Nansemond River and the Governor’s School Best Show honors for his mixed media works, ‘Gaia’ and ‘Blossom’. Syd Osborne of King’s Fork and Governor’s School won first place for his serigraphs, “Phobia Inception” and “Burning Touch”. Second place went to Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s Emma Conrod for her ebony pencil and watercolor “Heart Ache”, while third place went to NSA student Matt Nichols for his clay and undertone artwork. glaze, “The Smelly Snail”.

To be eligible, students must live in or attend a school in Suffolk and be in Years 10-12. The Suffolk Art Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The gallery is free and open to the public.
