BICHOLIM: “Serving God through art gives satisfaction and the happiness of serving Lord Ganesha is beyond description,” says Uday Hari Manerikar, a clay idol artist from Bicholim.

He lamented that due to the rising cost of raw materials, it is very expensive to make traditional idols these days and said that the government subsidy is the only profit an artist earns.

Uday revealed that he was attracted to idols since childhood and started making idols after passing his SSC exam. Her father and grandfather served the elephant god by making idols together for decades. The satisfaction and experience of purity gained from making an idol is heavenly and simply cannot be explained, says Uday.

Going for natural and traditional clay is difficult today and the increase in raw material prices has forced us to increase idol prices. Finding skilled workers is another daunting task, says Uday who managed to employ 8-10 workers in order to deliver to customers quickly. Idol prices range from Rs 1,500 to Rs 10,000 depending on its size.
